Abuse Abuse

I have left my in-laws house and I’m living separately with my husband for past 4 months because my mother in law is abusive and very violent. My father in law made the arrangement so that I can live away from her and my husband visits them. Their house is just 20min away from ours. Even after this arrangement she comes to our house and emotionally abuses me, throws and breaks things in our house. My father in law and husband are helpless and worry’s about the reputation. she shows a very violent behaviour. Is restraining order a law in India? How do I stop her from harming me. We have tried diplomatic approach and it doesn’t seem to work.

A.You can file suit for permanent injunction before civil judge restraining the mother-in-law from entering in your house and any interference. U can also take injunction under domestic violence act. If she treats u with cruelty u have option to register FIR under section 498a of ipc.

A.Please try to sort out the differences. If it doesn't work you will have to approach Police and Court authorities for further reliefs through domestic violence laws. Regards

A.Since your Husband & FIL are supporting you, you can record the misdeeds of your MIL (around 5 to 10 on different dates) and reprimand her with criminal & civil proceedings against her with the help of your Husband and FIL.
Yes you can get restraint orders from court in India, your's is a good case, more particularly when your Husband and FIL are supporting you.
