Post office nominee query Post office nominee query

My father died last year and he has put in 3 lakhs in post office. The nominee is his mother, i.e. my grandmother. Also, will certificate lists out my mother, self, sister and grandmother as the wills. In this case are we also authorised to get the amount in the post office or will the entire amount be given to my grandmother.

A.Hi,
The nominee will receive the full amount from the post office, unless it has been specifically mentioned in the will that the other beneficiaries can also claim a share of the same.
The best thing to do is to approach your grandmother and settle the matter with her.

A.Hai
In India, the nominee will usually receive the money of the deceased. However if the nominee is legally bound to transfer or distribute it to the legal heirs of the deceased, then she is bound to do the same. As there is a will certificate in this case and since it is legally binding, you will get your share from your grandmother, the amount as prescribed in the will certificate.
