Deletion of company data from laptop

I have resigned from company and under impression that data is backed up on portal, I have deleted the same from laptop. Now the company has issued me a show cause notice to revert why I should not be terminated and pay fine to them. I am OK to pay fine but termination letter will kill my chances for future jobs. What to do.
