House owner asking for money after 1 year we left the apartment

We were living in a rented accommodation in March 2023, had the agreement for 11 months and after that we left the apartment in May 2024 and we also have the new agreement of the same. The previous apartment's agreement was in my husband's name because we were engaged at that time but in the new accommodation, the agreement was in my name. We handed over the keys to the owner and also gave him, the flat in a very good condition. Everything was sorted, we had our deposit also back. After we left, then after a month our brother in law took the apartment with his friends, not sure if they had an agreement made or not. Recently, in 2025 February, they left the apartment and probably was not left in a good condition. In March, 2025, the owner started calling my husband that we should give him the money for the renovation and maintenance that he did for the apartment.
