Severance of Relationship and Financial Liability from Alcoholic Father
I am a self-employed entrepreneur residing in West Bengal. I am seeking legal advice on how to formally sever ties with my father (approx. age 60+) and ensure I have no liability for his personal debts. Conduct: My father is a habitual drunkard who returns home in a state of extreme intoxication daily, often late at night (11 PM to 2 AM). He is non-communicative and refuses to change his behavior, often creating a hostile environment. Financial Mismanagement: He earns only ₹6,000 per month but has accumulated over ₹65,000 in personal loans/debts. He does not contribute to the household and squanders his earnings on alcohol. My Standing: I am not a co-signer or guarantor for any of his loans. I operate a cloud kitchen and IT service business from my residence and am worried his creditors will harass me. Questions for Legal Advice: Can I issue a public notice in newspapers to declare I am not responsible for his future debts/actions? Given his habitual drinking and income, can I legally defend myself if he ever files for maintenance under the Senior Citizens Act? What legal steps can I take to ensure he cannot claim a right to my self-acquired property or business income?
