Dog urination and poop in apartment common areas

Our building has 4 houses. Ground floor is my house (given for rent), 1st floor has 2 houses, 2nd floor has 1 house. There is a small park(500 sqft) behind the ground floor house which is common for all of us. We have a back door to reach the park. 1st floor guy has a dog which he takes to the park and makes it to urinate and poop. I told him to not do it as the stench comes to our house when we open the back door. We are not able to use the park as well. He does not listen to the complaints. What would you suggest?

If the neighbour continues to ignore the issue, you may escalate the matter to the local municipal authority, such as the Greater Chennai Corporation. Municipal laws and public health regulations require cleanliness in shared spaces, and complaints about unsanitary conditions (including animal waste) can be acted upon. You can file a complaint online or at the zonal office requesting inspection and necessary action.

Dear Client,

A resident has the right to keep a pet, but cannot allow the dog to create nuisance or unhygienic conditions in common areas. Allowing urination and defecation in a shared space causing smell and preventing others from use amounts to nuisance and can be objected to.

You should first send a legal notice to the owner requiring him to stop using the common park for such purposes and to maintain proper hygiene and cleaning. The notice should clearly state that continued nuisance will lead to legal action.

If the issue continues, you can file a complaint before local authorities or approach the court seeking an injunction to stop the nuisance and restore use of the common area.

Please consult a local advocate for proper action and enforcement.
