Dear Client,
An adult individual has the fundamental right to live with dignity, make personal decisions, and choose their own course of life. A parent cannot legally compel an adult child to marry a person of the parent's choice, dictate every aspect of their lifestyle, or subject them to continuous harassment, intimidation, or abuse.
If the conduct amounts to verbal abuse, threats, emotional harassment, coercion, intimidation, or physical violence, the aggrieved person may seek legal remedies. Depending on the facts of the case, remedies may include:
1. Filing a complaint with the local police if there are threats, physical violence, criminal intimidation, wrongful restraint, or other criminal acts.
2. Seeking protection orders or other reliefs before the competent court where the conduct poses a threat to personal safety or liberty.
3. Approaching the jurisdictional Magistrate or other appropriate authority for protection against harassment or unlawful interference with personal choices.
4. Seeking legal intervention if there is any attempt to force a marriage, restrict movement, confiscate personal documents, or unlawfully confine the individual.
5. Instituting appropriate civil or criminal proceedings, as may be advised based on the specific facts and evidence available.
Further, an adult is generally free to reside separately from their parents and is not legally obligated to remain in an environment that is abusive or detrimental to their well-being. The precise legal remedy will depend upon the nature and severity of the conduct complained of.
