Mental Abuse and Harassment by Mother in law Mental Abuse and Harassment by Mother in law

I have been married for nine years, and throughout this time, my mother-in-law has subjected me to relentless emotional abuse and harassment. These actions have extended from before our wedding to the present day. She frequently uses abusive language, harasses me and my family members, and discriminates against us based on caste differences, skin color, and her perceived social distinctions.

Her behavior is often delusional, as she interrogates me for actions I have not committed. Additionally, she emotionally blackmails my husband, creating a strained dynamic in our relationship. She frequently emphasizes that I am a non-Brahmin, using it as a means to belittle me.

Her actions have not been limited to verbal abuse. On several occasions, she has called my parents and yelled at them, accusing them of dishonesty. Furthermore, she disrespected my mother in front of all our wedding guests, an incident of which I was unaware until later.

Despite enduring her harassing calls, text messages, and discriminatory behavior towards me in person and otherwise, I have tried to maintain peace. However, my husband's advice to ignore her has only caused a divide between us. I have reached a breaking point and can no longer tolerate her actions. I am determined to file a complaint against my mother-in-law to put an end to her harassment, at least towards me, if not towards all members of my family/society.

A.Dear Client,

The severe mistreatment and emotional harassment endured by a daughter-in-law from her mother-in-law warrant decisive action, including filing a complaint under Section 12 of the Domestic Violence Act before the relevant Magistrate. This Act allows an aggrieved person, a Protection Officer, or a representative to seek various reliefs. Additionally, Section 17 ensures the right of aggrieved women to reside in a shared household. Complaints can also be lodged online with the National Human Rights Commission, State Human Rights Commission, National Commission for Women, and State Commission for Women, who investigate women's issues. Seeking assistance from local NGOs dedicated to aiding distressed women is also advisable.

A.Dear Client,
Such kind of inhuman ill-treatment and emotional harassment by a mother-in-law towards her daughter-in-law deserves stringent action and strong protest by filing a complaint under Sec.12 of the Domestic Violence Act before the Magistrate concerned. Under Section 12(1) of The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, an aggrieved person or a Protection Officer or any other person on behalf of the aggrieved person may present an application to the Magistrate seeking one or more reliefs under this Act, provided that before passing any order on such application, the Magistrate shall take into consideration any domestic incident report received by him from the Protection Officer or the service provider. Section 17 of the Act casts a right to aggrieved women to reside in a shared household. Apart from this, you can make a complaint online (https://nhrc.nic.in/complaints/complaints/how-to-file-a-complaints) to the Chairperson, the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi and the State Human Rights Commission along with the Chairperson, National Commission for Women and State Commission for Women who are empowered to investigate complaints related to issues faced by women by sending an email to [email protected] or filing an online complaint. Further, you can also approach the State Commission of Women situated in your state, and seek help from the NGOs who rendered dedicated service to the women in distress. Reach out to an Advocate for guidance and steps.
