Joining bonus recovery 2years after walking away from the company Joining bonus recovery 2years after walking away from the company

I was working for XYZ company and quit the company within 6 months. I signed the joining bonus clause which says I have to return 1 lakh rupees which I had received as a Joining bonus if I leave the job within 1 year.
I got a clearance letter and an experience letter after I quit the company. After 6 months, XYZ company emails me saying I need to return the joining bonus. I kept on ignoring their email for 1 year and I paid tax for that joining bonus.
Now the company is threatening to take legal action and I am denying to pay. How this could be resolved?
I have the clearance letter as well as relieving letter from the XYZ company.

To answer your question, firstly the review the terms of the joining bonus clause that you signed when you joined the company. If the clause asks you to return the bonus if you leave prematurely i.e. within 1 year, then you are obligated to do.
As the company is threating to take legal action against you, i would suggest you to consult a lawyer who have expertise over employment matters.
