Respecting women has always hung heavy on our generation, hasn’t it? The latest incident is enough to showcase the misogyny embedded in the heads of lecherous teens.
On May 3, an Instagram group chats of some teenager boys with the name “boislockerroom” got public were they were found exchanging pictures of girls, making inappropriate comments and objectifying them. Those boys are from Delhi and nothing makes me more sad than this that they were from well education background. We talk about education solving problems and this is what well educated and our upcoming generations are doing.
This incident came to light after a girl from South Delhi made the screenshots public on social media exposing the group. The leaked screenshots witness school boys sharing photos of underage girls, degrading them and also planning gang rapes.
So, basically rape is just a word for those teenage boys. This group is active since 2016 and they have molested number of minor girls. That concludes that not a single girl is safe anywhere. Streets, schools, workplace, online platform and even home, I am sure there is not a single place where women are safe. Does a woman necessarily need to be your mother or sister for you to treat her body with respect? What about other women out there? Do they don’t deserve your respect?
India is a male dominated society and I raise a question to all the men, “Is masculinity so fragile that in order to feel better about yourself you need to have access over a woman’s body?” It is high time now that toxic masculinity should be addressed. "Bois locker room" is just an example. I am pretty much sure that there are hundreds of other groups where females are humiliated and slut shamed.
It is no more about safety of women whereas it is now about mentality of people. Why is it always have to be the girls who need to take care of their dressing sense and their dignity? Why it has to be always the girls who should reach home early and should not stay out late and why is it always them who needs to bow down before everyone. We the Indians worship Goddess but on the same hand we don’t know how to respect women. Almost every day we hear cases of domestic violence, rape, acid attack and many such criminal assaults against women. And, how can I forget illiteracy. In many places girls are not even allowed for higher education and gets married at a very tinder age, and we talk about equality.
The boys of “bois locker room” group randomly jumped into some girls Instagram account and shared their pictures in their group defaming them and had guts to ask them for their private pictures. Where does this audacity come from? Oh, well Indian parents never taught their boys to respect the girls. They were never asked to maintain the dignity and return home early. I am shocked with the thought that a bunch of boys made life difficult for several girls and these girls have to deal with so many men out there.
There are girls who takes stand for wrong done to them and I have huge respect for them. Unfortunately, most of the time a girl takes a stand for herself, she is induced by the fear of stalking, acid attack, defamation and even rape. This are the challenges faced by almost every girl.
The incident of “bois locker room” have created anger in people and they have been expressing their views on social media.
The Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal sent for the arrest of all those associated with the group and action would be taken against them.
Members of “bois locker room” threatened girls that they would leak their nude photos if they file any complaint.
Its high time now we need to stand up for our rights. People are not scared of doing wrong and so we need to raise our voice. If not out of values, this people must learn to behave out of fear.
