A.Hi,
The IRS prefers that you file all back tax returns for years you have not yet filed. That said, the IRS usually only requires you to file the last six years of tax returns to be considered in good standing. Even so, the IRS can go back more than six years in certain instances.
If you find my answer helpful then kindly rate me.

A.Hi,
As per the Finance Act 2016 amendment, you can file your previous income tax returns anytime on or before 1 year from the end of the relevant Assessment Year (AY). However, you cannot file the ITR for the last three years at a stretch i.e in one year.

A.Income Tax department can send letter for any case within ten years of filing if they have a reason to believe that there is some discrepancy and they need some clarification for any financial year or transaction. If your mother failed to file IT returns for the FY 2013-14 then they are asking for the it.

A.Yes Income Tax authority can send Notice for filing/reviewing of old ITR either on the basis of complaint of somebody else or from any information from Property Registration Office or from any other Authority that during that Assessment Year there is some sort of suppression on the part of that Assessee in her Income Tax Return or when as Senior Citizen she had not filed any ITR but she had the liability to file ITR due to certain financial transactions during that Assessment Year. It doesn't matter whether the Assessee is Senior Citizen or not.
So it is necessary to find out whether property related or through in any other manner some sort of Financial transaction happened in your mother's account during that Financial Year which attracts her liability for income Tax payment but that had not been done. However, it is necessary on the part of your mother to give immediate reply to that Notice after due consultation with your Tax Consultant for proper representation of your matter before the Income Tax Authority because IT Authority will try to impose Penalty.
