WhatsApp posting restriction
Hi Team,
I live an apartment in Bangalore. I am the owner of the flat I am living in. The apartment association has restricted the posting rights to the residents. Only the office bearers and 8 other committee members have the rights to post on the group. This was done as one of the residents was writing lengthy messages on whatsapp. Couple of us have also raised concerns about the cracks in the building and water seepage issues on the group, however, the office bearers hardly respond. As we persuaded them to respond, they restricted the posting rights from the members. Is this legal ? As I feel my freedom to expression is jeopardized. There is no discussion or concerns posted on the group apart from Concerns related to the building.
If the apartment association has a whatsapp group but the residents are not allowed to say anything on it, and if there is no other method through which the residents can raise their concerns, then you can approach the association and ask them to make a separate group allowing the residents to send messages. If they do not provide any such alternate platform, then you can raise a complaint with the association. If they still do not listen then you may approach a higher authority and form a legal complaint.
Thank you.
If they have made a whatsapp group for disseminating information from their end to all the members they are right in doing so and not allowing others to post a message on that group does not amount to curtailing the rights of the members and it will not be considered as an illegal act on their part.
Ideally the members should take this matter with the management committee and resolve this.
