Payment in lieu of notice period Payment in lieu of notice period

I signed an appointment letter with a CA firm where 2 months notice period was mentioned.
However because of their ill behavior i completed the work to the best of my knowledge and resigned from the firm without serving any notice period.
Now the firm has sent me an email asking to pay in lieu of 2 month notice period.
However it was nowhere mentioned in appointment letter that if notice is not served i will have to pay in lieu of that.

Further, i joined the firm before qualifying as CA, now that i have qualified, they gave a new appointment letter which i didn't sign, they are asking me to pay in accordance with the notice period mentioned in earlier appointment letter.

They are threatening me that they will take legal action against me.
What safeguard i have against this?

A.Dear Sir,
Let them take legal action against you since you have not done anything wrong and without any terms and even with terms they cannot recover any amount from you.
