Car loan - friend brought a car 5 years back

My friend brought a car 5 years back in loan he dint pay last one due but he dint get any notice so he thought the due was over and he left it but all of sudden one day after 5 years staff from finance company came to his house and asked him to pay the last due with interest of 5 years too is it legaal is there any way to avoid it
