Mental harrasment by father Mental harrasment by father

My mother is above 65 and father is 74. Since childhood they have mentally harassed me. I am 30+ woman. They used to constantly fight and make me suffer by torturing, beating and verbally abusing. Me and my mother were constantly asked to leave the house. Father never paid any attention to me and my needs inspite of being a govt employee.I was a bright student among first five toppers, yet my father forced me choose commerce, I pleaded him not to do that, fought with him yet he denied and forced me. Thereafter my grades started descending, the situation in the house didn't change, constant abuse and asking me n mother to leave the house. I went into depression, sought help from counselor and psychologist. When father came to know about this he started bullying me that I am mentally retard, I started failing in career and was tortured more. Since childhood he didn't even give me any expenses and that continued with constant abuse and violence. He doesn't let us do anything and still if we do he tortures, creates a scene...One day he asked mother to leave the house when she was down with high fever,I asked him not to do that so he started hitting me and even i retaliated. There after it was difficult to stay in the house with constant torture n pressure hence I left.. he constantly had asked me to get married and upon asked if something goes wrong in marriage will he support to which he denied. And when after many years i decided to get married he didn't come to talk to the in-laws, this created many misunderstandings and I am still un married. He doesn't regret even a bit for his actions. Even today i have to go through harrasment for the smallest things.. he never gave me maintenance and blames me for not getting married. I am exhausted. I feel like I will commit suicide or kill him.. marriage thing happened recently and I had left home almost 9 years ago.. i suffered depression twice and still don't know if I have got out of it or not. Is there anything I can do? He has Denied to give me a share in his self acquired property cause he behaves like a victim and knows law very well. He misuses this law and threatens, abuses, tortures me mentally even today for being unmarried and not done anything good with life. I don't have any security in life from him, I don't know why I am even born? Only to suffer and get nothing because of Indian law which is in favour of parents like my father. This is women empowerment in India. That's why it's better to commit suicide than fight this nonsense in my case.

A.Dear Client,
This type of attitude is common among homes across the country hence it is not an isolated incidence. If you are economically dependent on your father you may not have any choice other than remain in the same house and continue with your life. If you feel you can manage outside without the support of your father for all your needs, nothing prevents or restricts you from walking out of your home to look for the destiny of your choice. You cannot legally compel your father to maintain you as you are an adult. Therefore, you need to arrange for an independent source of income to live your life on your own terms. You have the right to file a complaint against our father if he hits you or hurts you in the local police station under Sec.12 of the PWDV Act, 2005. . Apart from this, you can make a complaint online (https://nhrc.nic.in/complaints/complaints/how-to-file-a-complaints) to the Chairperson, the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi and the State Human Rights Commission along with the Chairperson, National Commission for Women and State Commission for Women who are empowered to investigate complaints related to issues faced by women by sending an email to [email protected] or filing an online complaint. Further, you can also approach the State Commission of Women situated in your state, and seek help from the NGOs who rendered dedicated service to the women in distress.
