Maintenance paid for flat eligible for HRA exemption Maintenance paid for flat eligible for HRA exemption

I am paying 18000 to my landlord as rent which includes maintenance. Can I claim the entire amount for HRA exemption or just the rent (Rs.14000) while the maintenance charges(Rs. 4000) cannot be claimed? My landlord is adamant that I cannot claim Rs 4000 even when I am paying him lump sum amount (rs 18000) and he is supposed to submit the maintenance

A.Dear Client,
Is he giving you a receipt stating the break up of the charges? If yes then you cannot claim all 18000 if not then you can claim but to be more sure I would suggest you consult some Chartered Accountant. Regards
