Domestic violence - physical abuse at intervals

I'm writing this for my mother who had to face physical abuse at intervals and regular verbal abuses....my sister and I we're adults but still we've had to face abuse and physical torture all our lives. He is a maniac threatening my mother that he'll kill her if she thinks about a divorce. He has some sort of mental illness I'm not sure about considering he does superstitions Pooja's and blamed me to be under it too when I retaliated against. Please help and tell me what action can i take to not just go against him but also with an assurity of no life threatening situation.
