One of our employee resigned and he asked to serve the notice period, but as employer we are not willing to pay the notice amount as he was on leave without authorised

Notice period is the amount served by an employee before leaving the company. ON completion of notice period, employee is bound to get the money for completing the duration. How was the 'leave' unauthorised here? Please give in details.
