My ex employers is refusing to give a reference letter

I am in the process of going through an H1B Visa process and one of my ex employers is refusing to give a reference letter and I have mentioned the experience in the job application too. To put it in context, I had a very bad exit. Worked in school and left the school in the middle of an academic year without completing the exit formalities. It was way back 8 years ago and I want to get the experience letter and I may require that for my upcoming opportunities which unfortunately, I didn't foresee. I regret not taking any experience letter back then. How do I proceed further?
