Society people are not allowing me to give shelter to a street dog.

I am from Ahmedabad. There is one community dog who comes to my home, take rest, have food and go down back to street regularly since last 6 years. He is very gentle dog and doesn't bite or even bark. So everyday either I or my mother takes him to our home and he spends few hours at home. But now our society people are asking us not to take him home just because he is a street dog. What can be done in this situation?
