Procedure to file defamation case

Kindly let me know in detail, the procedure to file a defamation case against people who spread wrong things in society about me damaging my reputation? Whether I should file a civil or criminal case?
A.See if you are looking only for the compensation against the damages which happened to your reputation, then you should go for the civil suit but if you want to send them to jail then you should file a criminal case against them or you can go for both the options.
