Dog Theft

My dog was stolen by a poultry farm owner on 23 dec 2020. we came to know that he stolen our dog ion jan 20 2021( an eye victim who saw my dog there told us). when we asked them with them with the help of a constable, they said they have left my dog off and told they ll try to search the dog. But we came to know that they have sold the dog to someone. I didnt file any FIR yet. I dont want to leave my dog :( .I am not sure, how my local police repsonds to this, if i try to proceed legally. Please advise me if i can go legally and get my dog

Section 378 of the IPC defines theft as, “Whoever, intending to take dishonestly any movable property out of the possession of any person without that person's consent, moves that property to such taking, is said to commit theft”.
