Whether apology letter to the police has legal consequences
1 year ago
We are healthcare workers. Yesterday we (5 people) were stopped by a police sergeant while on a yellow cab for overloading. We were in an emergency because we were called from the hospital from a luncheon because a patient of ours became critical. We requested him to let us go because a life was at stake but he started to yell and berate us, threatening to call the media upon us. There was some verbal altercation only. Then he held us up for about 40 minutes, which is serious in case of a medical emergency. Then he asked for ₹500 as a "stop fine" and said he was going to let us go with a verbal warning. He did not even make a documentation of the fine. I was pissed off at this and took a video of the situation (as far as I know is legal to take of a police officer in a public space) which angered him more and he took away my mobile and deleted the video himself. Thereafter he dragged us to the police station, berated us some more and then forced us to write an apology letter and took our names and addresses. What are the legal consequences and what can I do about this sergeant?
If you have political background and legal background and able to spend lakhs of rupees then you can lodge complaint against such police sergeant. Otherwise it is waste of time and money to proceed against such police people.
You can proceed to take legal action in this regard and file a complain. Please reach out to the number on the website for more queries.
