If a passageway has been given across the plaintiff's property, the easement's goal would be to provide the easement holder—the defendant—access to their own property or land that is beyond the plaintiff's property. The easement-covered section of the plaintiff's property would be subject to the defendant's legal right to utilise it for the stated purpose.

The provisions of the easement may have been violated or a new legal matter may have arisen if the plaintiff found that the defendant had completely trespassed on their property or encroached upon it.
