A notice period is usually a clause in the employment contract, and must be provided while signing the contract. It usually depends upon company to company. Hence, if they haven't provided the time period of providing notice, you may approach the higher authorities or may visit the civil court for remedy.

Please specify your question. Whenever you join a company, there must be an employment contract signed between the parties, i.e, the employer and the employee wherein all the clauses are mentioned. If the company works anyway against those clauses, you must take a legal action for the same. However, if was fault at your part as well for not providing any notice period and absconding.
